Daycroft Montessori School Earns Re-accreditation from ISACS

Ann Arbor, MI (September 17, 2009) – Daycroft Montessori School of Ann Arbor has been re-accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS; www.isacs.org).

Re-accreditation followed a yearlong self-study, in which all Daycroft teachers and administrators participated in examining and documenting the school’s strengths and weaknesses, and identified future plans and priorities.

Daycroft then hosted an ISACS accreditation visiting team composed of experienced teachers and administrators from other member schools. In a three-and-a-half-day visitation, the ISACS team directly observed the Daycroft educational approach in action, evaluating its effectiveness and especially looking for congruence with the school’s self-evaluation.

In the follow-up report to the ISACS Evaluation Review Committee, the visiting team recommended re-accreditation for Daycroft, while also providing guidance for school improvements to be made before the next cycle of re-accreditation begins in several years. The ISACS board of trustees confirmed Daycroft’s re-accreditation at its most recent quarterly meeting.

“Re-accreditation by ISACS confirms that Daycroft continues to deliver on its promise of providing personalization education for children from preschool age through the upper elementary grades,” said Diane Mukkala, Daycroft’s head of school. “I am especially proud of Daycroft’s staff. Our teachers and administrators have worked so hard, not only for re-accreditation, but more importantly, to meet the educational needs of our students.”

About ISACS and the Accreditation Process

ISACS is a membership organization of 230 independent schools from 13 states of the Midwest region. The organization’s purpose is to promote development of strong learning communities characterized by high achievement, social responsibility, and independence of governance, programs, and policies.

The principal function of ISACS is to accredit its member schools, which, as independent not-for-profit institutions, have voluntarily chosen to guide their progress toward ideals of educational excellence as measured against high standards.

The ISACS accreditation process strives to recognize and preserve the freedom of each school to practice its own theory and philosophy of education. In evaluating Daycroft, for example, ISACS focused on the school’s ability to fulfill its mission of providing a highly individualized education guided by the distinctive student-centered teaching methods of Maria Montessori. The ISACS accreditation visiting team examined Daycroft’s effectiveness in delivering on this mission in everything from its admissions policies and processes to the school’s academic curriculum, as well its physical facilities and teaching resources.
